The first priority of Watering Malawi remains access to safe water, irrigation, and sanitation. Through funds largely raised by students, communities, and congregations and in partnership with multiple non-government organizations (NGOs), we continue to make significant progress in both rural and urban areas of Malawi.
We’ve learned a lot about the power of water, making it more accessible so that women and girls don’t have to make daily trips walking to and from a water source.
Many adolescent girls begin to miss school at least one week a month, and eventually drop out because there is no bathroom. So, along with borehole wells, irrigation, and fish farms, Watering Malawi has helped to place new bathrooms and hand washing stations at schools. This dramatically reduces sickness in students and empowers girls to stay in school. With child marriage on the rise in Malawi, making schools a safer place through sanitation and education is critical.
Last year Watering Malawi, through an initiative called Girl Power, and with gifts only designated to that cause, began investing in one girl’s dream. She wants to be a nurse. This week, I will meet with the school to check on her progress, and to invest in another girl’s dream. She wants to be a lawyer.
This is not just any public school in Malawi. This is the Joyce Banda Foundation School, a boarding school in Blantyre – room, board, bus fare, uniform, shoes…the works. It also means an accredited Cambridge diploma, and the ability to apply for any college in the world. At Girl Power, we dream big.
